Hiking season is here and it’s time to begin planning your next journey outside. There is a lot that goes into preparing for a hiking trip. Most outdoor aficionados would say that anything packed in your bag must be absolutely essential. There are many things that you may or may not need on your hike, but there are 3 compact tools we think are vital to pack for every hiking or outdoor expedition.

Canteen

Water is the most essential item you can bring on a hike. You need to drink a cup of water every 45 minutes to stay hydrated. Carrying a canteen that holds around 2 to 3 liters of water is definitely necessary, even for a simple hike. Some canteens have an attached carabineer, which makes it easy to clip on your bag or belt, but it’s most important to carry a strong, portable container.  You can live without food for 3 weeks, but can only live without water for 3 days.

Knife

A knife can be an extremely useful tool while outside. It's utility ranges from opening packets of food to cutting cords to creating a spark. A typical knife size for backpacking or hiking depends on what you plan to do and carry. The main thing you need to focus on is the sharpness of the blade. A dull blade is like a gun with no bullets. Without a solid knife, your experience outdoors can be a bit more challenging.

GPS

A GPS device is a smart item to have while hiking or traveling outdoors. At the beginning of your hike you can mark your location so you always know how to get back to civilization. One of our more popular GPS handhelds, the GPSMAP 64st, has a built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass, which shows the direction you are heading even when you’re standing still. Its barometric altimeter tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude and can even be used to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.

The best time to get out there and enjoy the outdoors is right now, just don’t forget to pack smart and bring plenty of water. Remember to share your outdoor adventures with us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram by using hashtag #HaveNoLimits.
