Year’s Final Grand Tour Event Draws Top Cycling Teams to Spain
The third and final major Grand Tour of 2019 will get underway this weekend in the Spanish sun.
For three grueling weeks, the world’s best riders will try to claim the red jersey as the race winds its way across coastal roads and steep Pyrenees mountains — with side jaunts into Andorra and France — before culminating in a grand final procession through the capital city of Madrid.
This year, the race will cover 3,272.2 racing kilometers, split into nine mountain stages, seven flat days, a team and individual time trial and, as a bonus, an unprecedented four-kilometer section of off-road racing.
Four summit finishes in the first week will put the climbers to an early test, while week two extends the punishment, wrapping up with two consecutive mountain stages. This is where the new ClimbPro feature on the latest Edge devices will come into play. It shows riders the remaining ascent and grade when climbing following a route or course so they can better gauge their effort.
The big news is that last year’s winner, Simon Yates from Mitchelton-SCOTT will not be defending his title. He’s not been selected by the team to ride. Instead, Esteban Chaves will be the team’s GC select and leader.
Another contender for the win could be Nairo Quintana of Team Movistar. Quintana will be looking to claim back-to-back wins for the Colombians in 2019.
And of course, Team Ineos can’t be overlooked. Even though their most recent winner, Egan Bernal isn’t racing, they will be competitive with Tao Geoghegan Hart and David de la Cruz aiming for top honors.
Stay up to date with all of the racing in Spain as Garmin Cycling will be covering every wheel turn over the three weeks with some unique insight into the event from our key sponsored teams who’ll be racing.
