With the Garmin Alpha, Silence is Golden

Cf-lgHunting season is in full swing, and for many, that means following some highly-trained bird dogs in pursuit of pheasants and quail.  That's certainly the case for the boys over at Pheasants Forever, who just wrapped up their Rooster Road Trip this week.  The annual event features three upland hunters traversing five states in just five days, all in pursuit of Mr. Ringneck and Gentleman Bob.

Along the way, they've used our Montana 650t loaded with City Navigator mapping to direct them from town to town and field to field.  They've also put our new Fenix hiking watch through its paces, which is handy for determining not only position and heading, but temperature, altitude, and barometric pressure.

But the star of the show has been the Alpha Track and Train System for sporting dogs.  Not only can you see where your dogs are and what they're up to, but you can also ensure that they'll keep their good manners even when the birds start flying.

Bob St. Pierre, Pheasant Forever's VP of Marketing, makes a great point about the Alpha as well – it allows you to hunt much quieter.  In the old days, you'd often holler for your dog — but with the Alpha, you know where they are and can even use a built-in tone on the collar to bring them back in.  Hunters typically used beepers, too — which sort of made your hunting party sound like a squadron of backing up dump trucks.  Not conducive to a stealthy hunt.

All that racket ends with the Alpha.  Silence is golden… and hunter orange.
