Viking 62 Wins Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament and Garmin 5 Grand Giveaway
Imagine hooking a 680-pound blue marlin just 15 minutes into a major tournament. Now imagine having to wait an entire week to see if anyone could best your catch. We caught up with Viking 62 Captain Brian Komer, who talked to us about how he and his team caught their tournament winning 680-pound Atlantic blue marlin at the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament.

Garmin: How did the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament work? It is a certain format or are there different categories?
Brian Komer: There is a blue marlin release division for first, second, and third place. There are also prizes for heaviest overall tuna, dolphin and wahoo, along with daily prizes. It has a pretty complex prize structure, but there are several different ways to win.
Garmin: How did your team catch the winning fish?
Brian: We actually caught it 15 minutes into the first day. I was really just looking at the water and on our Garmin GPSMAP 8208 MFD that is hooked up to a SiriusXM receiver, I noticed a push of warm water in the current, so I just stayed right off the point of it on the temperature break. We caught it on an artificial lure. Our team is lucky to have a very experienced crew onboard, so once we hooked it, they knew what to do and there wasn’t a lot of chaos going on in the cockpit. We used a flying gaff to stick the fish, pulled the rope through the door on the back of the boat, then about six of us grabbed ahold of the fish’s head and pulled him right through the door and under the deck. Our angler, Earle Hall, has been fishing for quite a while as well, so being able to boat that fish was a combination of experience, teamwork, and good communication.
