Unexcused absence

First things first: If you’re striking out on a run in a new city, don’t assume you’ll remember the way back to your hotel. Here’s where you can make the most of Forerunner’s GPS navigation features. Just start your run as usual and Forerunner will record a track, which is basically a breadcrumb trail of where you’ve traveled. When it’s time to head back to your hotel or wherever you started, press mode to get to the main menu, then navigationback to start. The map displays the path or your track back to your starting point. As you approach a turn, Forerunner will beep to alert you. You can also press mode to view the compass screen, which displays a directional arrow and shows the distance back to start.

You can also mark locations along your run — like a quaint café you want to try for lunch or a park or other attraction the family would enjoy. To mark a location, press mode to get to the main menu. Select navigationmark location. Forerunner will name this location with a 3-digit number and symbol. To spell out a name, highlight the field, press enter and then use the up/down arrow keys to select or delete characters from the pull-down menu and then select “done” from the pull-down when complete. Highlight OK. When you want to return to a stored location, press mode to get to the main menu and then select navigationfind. Scroll through the list to find the location name, press enter to select it and then select “go to”. To stop navigating to a location, press mode and select navigationstop go to.
