This is a guest post from Drive Nacho Drive on how their Garmin fenix helped them find their way through Nepal's Himalayan range. Check out their new book here.

Sheena and I loaded up our backpacks and headed into Nepal's Himalayan range with the goal of trekking all the way around the Annapurna range. Sheena had been insisting on doing this trek for months, but on paper it seemed pretty daunting: over 200 kilometers of trail through the biggest mountains in the world.

It was the first time we'd set off on a big trek without a traditional GPS unit; this time we were carrying only our Garmin fenix GPS watch. We trekked through jungle and up into the high mountains as the days ticked by. As we approached Thorong La Pass, the high point of the trek, we were stopped by a snowstorm and forced to wait for three days in the shadow of a 500 year old Buddhist monastery built into the stone cliffs. On the fourth day, we began our ascent, and three days later descended into the high deserts of the Tibetan plateau.

Our fenix was indispensible for such a long trek; we used it to stay on track and plan our nightly stops. We found ourselves using the elevation feature often to see how far we still had to climb before our planned sleep breaks. After 18 days, we stumbled out of the mountains and back to our base at Pokhara. It was a life changing experience, and not one to tackle without good preparation and the right gear.
