The Memorial March: Honoring Marine Raiders One Step At A Time
Garmin is proud to support the United States Military and acknowledge every sacrifice those who serve make for our country. Today marks one year since the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed, killing 4 Army National Guardsmen and 7 Marine Raiders. Tomorrow, in honor of the fallen Marine Raiders, 21 Marines, Sailors, and family members will begin their 770-mile journey from the location of the Black Hawk crash back to the Marine’s base in Camp Lejeune, NC. The Marine Raider Memorial March has been in existence since announced to the public in May of 2015. Each participant will be carrying a 45 pound rucksack. “Rucksack is a term derived form the German language that the US military uses to describe it’s back packs they utilize to carry gear,” said Nathan Harris, founder and director of the Marine Raider Memorial March.
The 21 participants will be broken down into seven three-person teams and they will utilize a relay race concept. Each team will average 11 miles before the next team takes over. The groups will be passing through Panama City and Tallahassee before heading north to Georgia. They will travel through Thomasville, Valdosta, Waycross and Savannah in Georgia. Then, in South Carolina, the groups head north hitting Beaufort, Charleston, Georgetown, and Myrtle Beach. “On the final stretch of our route we will enter North Carolina where we will pass through Wilmington,” said Harris. “We will end our march at Camp Lejeune, NC, on March 21st, 2016.
“Often times this brotherhood goes misunderstood or misrepresented to the public. The Marine Raider Memorial March represents carrying our brothers home from the location they died to the place they were based,” said Harris. “We feel this provides an intimate look at the unbreakable bond that military members share. It is for these reasons that the Marine Raider Memorial March is important to know about.”
Everyone participating is equipped with vívosmart HR products and will utilize its features to aid in their journey. The Snapshot feature on the Connect IQ app will show caloric and heart rate data. This data will assist the medical support team with helping the groups sustain a healthy diet. The vívosmart HR will offer other information associated with recovery cycles and sleep tracking. “The app places an emphasis on community interaction and the Marine Raider Memorial March will be able to compare how fast some groups are going versus other groups,” said Harris. “This will be important when continuously calculating where we will be at.”
The 11-day journey will be a challenge, but we are happy to be involved in the remembrance of the fallen Black Hawk crew. Fore more information or to donate to the Brothers in Arms Foundation, please visit marineraidermemorialmarch.com
