The Garmin Marathon: A Secret Workout — Yasso 800s

Garmin Marathon (3)In chatting with Bart Yasso this past week, about his involvement in The Garmin Marathon on April 21st, we got on the topic of marathon workouts. Yasso, who is known by many as the "Mayor of Running" is the creator of the Yasso 800s Workout — a workout used by many as a finishing time predictor and a gauge to ensure runners are in marathon shape. It's a simple workout. Let's say you want to run a 3h 30min marathon. Well, you would then run 800 meters in 3 minutes and 30 seconds, take a 3 minute and 30 second rest and do it again. Ten times. Yasso 800

"The time it takes you to run 800-meter repeats in minutes and seconds works out to be your marathon finish time in hours and minutes," Yasso said. "It worked for me for many years. Amby Burfoot named the workout after me like an astronomer that locates a new star. Amby admired the 800s for their simplicity and wrote about the exercise in the October 1994 issue of Runner’s World. Yasso 800 SendEverywhere I go I meet runners that tell me they curse my name every Wednesday evening."

To make the workout even easier, you can use the Workout Creator tool in Garmin Connect and send the workout directly your compatible Forerunner– including the 910XT, 610 and 410. You can see on my workout I even added a 10 minute warm up and cool down. Pretty cool stuff!!

To kick off our Festival of Forerunners and the Garmin Marathon, In the YASSOLand of Oz we would like to invite you to join us at 3pm CST on Friday April 20, 2012 at our headquarters in Olathe, KS. We will be opening up our auditorium for you to listen to Yasso himself and ask him about training, tips or just questions about his amazing running career. Yasso will also be signing autographs for those in attendance. Please send an email to garminblogs@garmin.com if you plan to attend this event. If you can't make it, Yasso will also be mingling around and signing some autographs at the packet pickup right across the street at approximately 5pm.

If you have not yet signed up, there is still time to jump in the 5km, half marathon or full marathon.
