Team Garmin Takes Second in the Race Across the Atlantic!
After setting sail to Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland nearly two weeks ago from New York, the entire Clipper fleet has finally reached its destination. With what proved to be a difficult race across the Atlantic and a nearly photo-finish between multiple teams at the end, Team Garmin perservered and came in 2nd!
Garmin Skipper Jan Ridd reflected on the end of the race and how Team Garmin was able to finish so well:
Good morning. Well eventually Team Garmin has got on to the podium. After a very testing crossing of the Atlantic we managed to hold of the chasing boats to secure second place in this race. The race was very tactical requiring careful routeing and more constant work to keep the yacht sailing in some light winds. We made our bid for the podium a few days ago utilizing the Stealth Mode to make a course change and challenge for the lead. The crew worked extra hard and we came out of Stealth Mode very much in contention for the overall lead.
We took some chances cutting the corner of the high pressure just off the coast of Ireland to reduce the lead Derry-Londonderry had and it worked seeing Team Garmin in first position for a couple of schedules but Derry-Londonderry defended their lead brilliantly, making some bold decisions when needed to ensure they had better wind to see them to the finish.
As we approached the finish the boats in the lead including ourselves saw the wind get lighter and lighter allowing the following yachts to literally charge up behind us and reduce the lead we had worked so hard to achieve. The last few hours of the race were pure hell with six yachts very close fighting for the three podium places.
Congratulations to Derry~Londonderry~Doire for holding on to first place and beating the home port curse. We tried our hardest but we were more concerned with defending our second position from Jamaica Get All Right and PSP Logistics, which nearly cost us all the podium as Old Pulteney and GREAT Britain came charging forward.
It was an incredibly close finish and I am so pleased that we managed to hold on to second, and finally the crew of Team Garmin get the success they so badly deserve. We are all looking forward now to getting to Derry-Londonderry and enjoying some Irish hospitality.
Jan, Team Garmin
Congratulations to Jan and Team Garmin on a great race and strong finish in Ireland. Best of luck as you set sail to Amsterdam in a week and finish strong racing back to London!
