Team Garmin: Millar wins thriller in Stage 12 of Tour

Sprint 1 Millar podiumOne thing we've learned watching the Tour de France over the years is that no matter how much you yell at your computer or TV, the breakaway rarely survives to the finish. It's a numbers game, the many against the few. Nearly every day, the final few kilometers feature "the catch." But not today. Not when David Millar, a longtime leader of Team Garmin and vocal advocate for clean cycling, was determined not to lose. So on the longest stage of this year's Tour – a week after he and seven of his eight teammates were caught up in a devastating crash that crushed the team's GC hopes – David outlasted and outmaneuvered the other four men in his daylong breakaway to give the Argyle Armada and its fans a victory they badly needed. Here's an excerpt from the team's recap at SlipstreamSports.com, and you can find more about the big win in coverage, analysis and photos by Bicycling, VeloNews and CyclingNews. Congratulations, David! You're a true champion.

But after that it was all Millar into the final 250 meters. Peraud launched his attack for the line but Millar was clearly stronger, never letting him come around.

“I won stage 13 in 2002 and it was one of my proudest moments and this is very similar to that,” Millar said.

“It’s taken our team going through turmoil to bring this out of me. I never thought my time had passed. We needed it, I wanted it.”
