Team Garmin: Injured Vande Velde out in Missouri, Hesjedal 2nd in Vuelta stage 10

CVVfelt So much for an easy start to the Tour of Missouri. In the closing meters of Monday's opening stage in St. Louis, Team Garmin's defending champion Christian Vande Velde sustained a hairline fracture at the base of his second metacarpal.

"Luck hasn't been on my side this year," Christian said Monday night. "I went down in the big crash within 500 meters. I crashed into the guys who went down first, then into a fire hydrant. It could have been a lot worse. Racing is going to be painful but I'm the defending champion and continuing is important to me and my team. I'll be at the start tomorrow."

True to his word, he lined up at the start in Ste. Genevieve, but after rolling through the neutral zone, the fracture was too much to ignore. "Christian's had a hard year," director Jonathan Vaughters said, "but as he's shown over and over, he's an incredibly tough athlete."

As Team Garmin's remaining riders continue their trek across Missouri, one of Christian's most reliable counterparts the past two summers in France made news of his own in Spain. Canadian Ryder Hesjedal made the argyle armada proud with attacks today in the Vuelta, landing in second place on Stage 10.
