Spring snowstorm doesn’t dampen runners’ spirits
For this race we were bringing in friends and family from Tampa, Florida, St. Louis, Grapevine, Texas and Joplin, Missouri. As my sister and her husband were driving through Kansas, my brother Patrick from Tampa and my friend Pete from St. Louis and I went to the expo to get our race stuff. We happened to be at the expo when the cancellation was announced and as you and all the other folks working for the event were disappointed, we were also disappointed. So Patrick, Pete and I decided to go back to the hotel and change into our running stuff and run the marathon tonight. Considering that none of us have ever visited Olathe, we torn out a copy of the race course map and grabbed a couple of bottles of water and headed out around 4 p.m. We are staying at the Holiday Inn on 151st so we started from the hotel and followed the map and the markings on the roads. It was much like an adventure race as we got lost a couple of times and tried to find our way. At mile 19 or so we stopped at a gas station and got more water and Gatorade and headed back on course. I have attached the screen print from my Garmin for support. The final results were:
Overall winner: Pete S., Masters winner: Patrick B., 1st place 35-39, George B.
We all came to Olathe to run a marathon, and we ran the course and completed the marathon. I imagine we are the only finishers of the 2009 Olathe marathon.
Truth be known, these adventurous runners were not the only finishers of the 2009 Olathe marathon. A couple from Nebraska visited our friendly Olathe YMCA on Saturday and ran their marathon indoors on the treadmill. They complimented the city, race staff and YMCA on how they were treated during their stay. We hope they all will be back next year. And we hope the blizzard will not.
