SKA National Championship Heads to Fort Pierce

Nearly 250 teams will battle it out this weekend for over $400,000 in cash and prizes during the 2016 Mercury Southern Kingfish Association National Championship in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Three Garmin sponsored professional fishing teams, Team Tuppens, Reel Anarchy and Beeracuda, will be gunning to catch a bigger king mackerel over two days than the rest of the field to take home the top prize in the Open Class.

Reel Anarchy, led by Captain Floyd Miller, will be looking to defend their 2015 SKA National Championship title and keep the momentum they gained by winning the Open Class in the last Division 8 tournament of the 2016 season. The battle station on their 32’ Contender consists of dual Garmin GPSMAP 7612xsv chartplotter/sonar combo units

You can’t miss the Garmin-wrapped Team Tuppens boat, led by Capt. Steve Sprague. Team Tuppens is all about having fun, but they are fierce competitors on the water and would love nothing more than to come out with a win. Their decked-out 38 Jupiter with dual GPSMAP 7616xsv units that utilize the revolutionary Panoptix LiveVü down technology is a force to be reckoned with. Team Tuppens finished second overall in the very skilled SKA Division 10.  Anglers Billy Brodbeck and Jason Phillips could each reel in the Loch Ness Monster if they tried, and Junior Angler Christopher Sprague and Senior Angler James Gilchrist each finished first in their respective age groups for the season. Team Tuppens is gunning for their first SKA National Championship victory and they believe that 2016 is their year to do it!

Captain Tim Gray guided Beeracuda to a solid season out of his Onslow Bay 33’ Tournament Edition behind his two GPSMAP 7612 units. The Beeracuda Fishing Team qualified for the SKA National Championship by finishing second overall in SKA Division 9 – Carolinas.

The winners of the Open Class will receive a package worth $90,000, which includes a Garmin quatix 3 smartwatch, custom Ocean Tamer bean bag, and a shiny new 239 Sea Pro with a Loadmaster trailer and 300 HP Mercury Verado outboard. However, the big bucks will be made in the Calcuttas, or side pots.
