Scenes from L’Alpe-d’Huez
With Team Garmin and the rest of the world’s top cyclists already well on their way to Saint-Etienne, their focus is on the road ahead. But we can still take a moment to look back on the gorgeous scenery in the showpiece stage of this three-week saga – the 210 km from Embrun to L’Alpe-d’Huez. Not only did the cycling action live up to expectations, but Team Garmin also had some star power in its camp.
Anyone watching the Versus coverage yesterday saw a great interview with movie star Michael Douglas, who was decked out in his Team Garmin cap. When asked who he liked in this year’s race, he rattled off David Millar’s name – a favorite for a stage win or time trial victory – and Christian Vande Velde as a contender for a spot on the podium. Also showing support for the team was NBA coaching legend Pat Riley, who we hope was sharing some championship-caliber strategy with the team. (Speaking of Christian, be sure to check out the latest story in "The Garmin Chronicles" at bicycling.com. The headline simply states "Vande Velde is clean.")
