Within the last couple of weeks, many of you received — especially if you are an AOPA member — a CD-ROM from the AOPA Air Safety Foundation on weather and Air Traffic Control.  ATC has the ability to look at radar images of weather and help you through the bad areas. But, if you are using XM Satellite Radio weather you also have a good view of the weather from the cockpit.  Many Garmin products use the XM radio service and can display NEXRAD weather. This provides you with similar information that the controller on the other end of the radio sees.  Remember that the radar images you see on the Garmin product can be up to five minutes old, but it should still provide you with enough information to avoid the worst part of the weather. Between the controller’s weather and your XM WX you should be able to come up with a plan to avoid the bad weather.
