Roger’s Runway: Saving gas

RogersrunwayIn watching the news from day to day, you will no doubt hear about the price of gas going up and up. And with the rising price of aviation gas, everyone is looking for ways to save fuel. Well I have an idea for you… and Mother Nature is going to help. If you have any of the Garmin systems that have XM weather on it (like the GPSMAP 496 or the G1000) and you have the Aviator package from XM Radio, then you have winds aloft. As pilots, we always want to have a tailwind because it helps get us to our destination faster and of course, saves us gas. If we get to our destination 30 minutes earlier, then we save that much gas, thus putting money back into your pockets. That extra $20 you spend every month for the better XM package just paid for itself in one flight. Now granted you might have headwinds on the way home but look for the altitude that has the least amount of winds. If you do not have the Aviator package from XM then consider trying it for a month to see the benefits first hand.
