20140531_162422Captain Rene Armesto and his crew set out to fish in the 11th Annual Blue Water Fishing Classic in Miami, Florida at the beginning of June.  Aboard his boat, Rising Sun II, Capt. Armesto knew they had a great shot at being competitive in the tournament.  Little did he know how well they'd actually do.

The Blue Water Fishing Classic is a tournament for wahoo, kingfish, tuna and dolphin and is put on through numerous sponsors and the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department.  The proceeds go to provide funding for fishing scholarships for disadvantaged youth and help support the Miami-Dade park program.

Onboard, Rising Sun II has a suite of Garmin marine electronics.  It's equipped with a GPSMAP 7212, GPSMAP 1040xs, GCV 10 sonar black box, GSD 26 sonar black box, GHP 20 autopilot, GMR 24 xHD radar and GXM 52.

After a great few days of fishing, Capt. Armesto and his team not only ended up winning the tournament overall, they also won the Junior and Lady competition.  The final weight total was 65.38 lbs, 17.36 lbs for the Junior competition and 23.95 lbs for the Lady competition.  The total winnings was nearly $10,000 and some great hardware to put up on the mantle!

20140601_194222Among nealy 40 other boats, Capt. Armesto was able to utilize his Garmin electronics to the fullest and win the tournament this year but this is not foreign territory for the Rising Sun II.  They won all these prizes in 2012 and repeated again in 2013 except for missing out on the grand prize by only a few pounds.

Congratulations to Capt. Armesto, his crew and Rising Sun II.  Good luck the rest of the year!
