Q: Usually the New Year brings new resolutions and many of those revolve around health. If eating healthy is one of your new year’s resolutions, what advice do you have to start the year off right and maintain your goal?

A: Set small weekly goals and prep for success.  If adding more vegetables to your diet is important then prep veggie bags on Sunday and add hummus for grab and go snacks for the week.  If you want to avoid excess sugar – make some overnight oats each evening that will be ready when you are in the morning.  Preparation is the key to success.  Making small changes will add up to big results.

Q: Should you start simple and have your goal be to eat less sweets/snacks throughout the day, or go all out and begin meal planning/prepping each week?

A: Fluid goals are key to not failing.  Preparation of snacks and meal planning will all make life easier in general.  My first tip is eat less sugar and the least processed foods you can.  They will keep you fueled longer and feeling better.  Oh and don’t forget to drink plenty of water too!  Cutting out all of your favorites is just hard.  Baby steps in the right direction will help the evolution to your new you in 2016.

Q: What are the first steps to eating healthy or making healthier food choices?

A: Start by making small changes to what you eat and drink.  Take a big bottle of water with you to work.  Drink as much water throughout the day as you can.  Carry snack bags of veggies or fresh fruit with you.  Always have an option that you can turn to instead of hitting up the vending machine or fast food restaurant.  I personally started with one meal a day. Breakfast.  I would make a smoothie or overnight oats and have it every single day.  From there I incorporated more vegetables and fruits and less processed foods.  One small step each day will get you to your goal.

Q: When grocery shopping, what are some foods to make sure to get that will last a long time/ go well in a lot of recipes and help one stay on track with healthy eating?

A: I love gluten free rolled oats.  Quinoa.  Black rice.  Baby carrots – so easy and no prep required.  Salad greens, spinach or kale.  Perfect for smoothies or for lunch. Nuts – great protein source.  Pre-bag them for portion control too.  Canned tomatoes are perfect for a quick marinara sauce or in soup.  Bananas – eat them ripe or freeze them with the peel off for smoothies to last a long time.

Peanut Butter Cup Overnight Oats.  Vegan. GF.:
1/3 cup of nut milk (I used cashew unsweetened Silk)
1 tablespoon of vanilla Vega One protein powder
1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
1 tablespoon of almond or peanut butter (I used Justin's)
1 teaspoon of hemp seeds
Splash of vanilla extract
Topping options:
Chopped nuts
Chopped Vega maca bar
Vegan chocolate chips
Coconut flakes
Hemp seeds
Cacao nibs
Almond or peanut butter (softened)
Directions:
Into a jar with a lid, add the all of the ingredients with the exception of the toppings you choose.  Give it a good stir or shake and refrigerate overnight.  Prior to consuming, I shake it again to mix it all up.  Add your toppings and devour.

Q: Along with healthy eating, what sort of exercises will help you maintain your resolutions?

A: Something as easy as a walk each day will help you to burn calories.  This can be a sunrise walk with your favorite pup before work to a lunchtime walk with a friend or a relaxing walk after dinner.  Take the stairs over the elevator.  Daily stretching and yoga will help relax the mind and relieve stress.  My favorite is running.  Start with a run/walk combination if you’re new to it.  Walk 3 minutes run 1. Then start to reduce the walking and build up the running.  Commit to move your body for 10-15 minutes a few times a day.
