Are you thinking of going hiking this summer and need help determining where to go? We’ve narrowed it down to our two favorite places hike in North America and it wasn’t easy. With so many places to explore and discover it was hard, but we believe both of these settings are perfect hiking spots for a nice summer getaway.

The first on our list is Zion National Park in Utah just near Springdale. Hiking is very popular at this park. Around 2.5 million people visit Zion every year, so it’s a popular place for the outdoorsy type. The park covers an area of 147,000 acres with elevations reaching near 9,000 feet. The Park is home to beautiful Navajo sandstone canyons, remote terraces and tight ravines, miles of wilderness trails that crisscross through the backcountry, and even paved trails to inspire more casual visits from locals. You can also bet on some tremendous photo opportunities with the abandoned cliff houses and rock art that was left behind by the Anasazi people nearly 800 to 1,500 years ago. Flash floods do occur in Zion and there are hundreds of different traversing trails to get lost on so make sure to check your Garmin TOPO maps and the weather before planning your hike.

Second on our list and maybe the more popular of the two is the Appalachian Trail. This famous hiking trail stretches over 2100 miles and passes through 14 states and is widely considered the longest “hiking-only” footpath in the world. Since the trail is so long, it covers many different types of terrain from steep rocky climbs, to vast open trails in forest areas.

According to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy there have been fewer than 15,000 people who have actually successfully hiked the entire trail. If you are a hiker here in the States, it would be a shame if you didn’t at least see a portion of this infamous and challenging trail.

These are only just a few amazing places to hike this summer, with tons more to choose from. If you are considering planning a hiking trip, don’t forget to pack your Garmin handheld GPS device so you can locate your position quickly and precisely to maintain your location even in heavy cover or in deep canyons. Whether you’re in deep woods or just near tall buildings and trees, you can count on Garmin GPS to help you find your way when you need it the most.
