Peg’s Posts: Race recap for KC half marathon

KC half 2011-1 IMGP0373With more than 100 Garmin associates doing one of the three distances (full, half or 5k), we saw plenty of familiar faces throughout the race. Many who hit PRs or managed some amazing feats despite injury or other setbacks. No surprise most were sporting various Forerunner flavors. Justin and Greg were testing out the new 910XT, recently unveiled at the triathlon world championships in Kona. My pacing partner was the Forerunner 610, customized to show my time, distance and average pace, with vibration alerts at every mile split. Miles 4-8, we picked up our pace and made up for our conservative start. Then we hit a gradual 2-mile climb that had me pumping my arms to make up for what my legs were lacking. Around mile 10, Justin said we could either pick it up a bit now or really hammer it in the final mile to hit our time goal. That’s all Pre needed to hear. He took off. Justin dropped back with me and like any good pacer, kept the conversation minimal but positive and direct. Pre’s yellow Oregon Track Club singlet was a beacon, out of reach but still in sight, for the next two miles. We reunited just past the finish line and soon found Justin’s family.

Thanks to my personal pacers who pushed me (without being pushy) to within 10 seconds of my PR, on a much hillier course. And a huge thanks to the KC Sports Commission, race sponsors and all the volunteers who put on a fabulous race. See our run in Garmin Connect.
