There’s a gritty pack of cyclists tearing around nearby Wyandotte County Park for the next few days. Yesterday marked the start of the USA Cycling Cyclocross Nationals and races continue through Sunday with nearly 2,000 registered riders. Never mind the ice storm that hit KC this week, the just-above-freezing temps yesterday that turned slick to sludge or the snowstorm forecast for today and tomorrow. Perfect conditions for this hardcore, adrenaline-packed sport where riders encounter various types of terrain, elevation and obstacles. Inclement weather only adds to the challenge.

A Garmin Edge customer who’s competing tomorrow contacted me recently to update me on his recent training. Here’s what David had to say: “I have been insanely training with my Garmin Edge 305 for Cyclocross Nationals. I use my Edge even in cross races. Last Sunday, it was cold, gross, and wet in Parkville. We rode through water, sand, mud and everything mixed together. My 305 was so dirty, I could not even read it. It seemed to survive the conditions just fine and I could check out my data later.”

David uses Edge and MotionBased to track and analyze all of his rides. Talk about precise — when I asked his mileage for the year, the answer was 5996.7 miles in 253 days of riding. I think that’s more miles than I drive my vehicle in a year … seriously. Click here to see a MotionBased profile of one of David’s recent races, Sunflower Cyclocross, where he placed 6th. Stay tuned next week to find out how David fared in his race at nationals. If you’re in the KC area, bundle up and head to WyCo Park to see the snow flying first-hand. Click here for daily coverage of the races (be sure to read the blog post on the rider who dealt with a broken chain by hefting his bike and carrying it through the first loop).
