Screen Shot 2013-01-25 at 11.41.03 AMWith less than three
months until the Garmin Marathon In the Land of Oz, we’re in the thick of plans to offer runners a wicked good time right here at our Olathe, Kansas headquarters. The event takes place on Saturday, April 20 and offers a full marathon, half marathon, 5k and kids race. It’s a chance for runners from around the world to start their Forerunners at the place where their device was designed! A highlight for this year’s event will be appearances by Garmin-sponsored elite athletes, including Olympian Desi Davila and U.S. 50k record holder Josh Cox. We’re also excited to have Bart Yasso, Chief Running Officer for Runner’s World, as the official training partner for this year’s race. While Bart’s travel schedule won’t permit him to be here this year, he’s lending his coaching expertise and friendly guidance with training plans — three levels of plans for each race distance — as well as weekly training tips.

IMG_9421 IMG_9420Bart’s most recent training tip: Measure your effort: If you’re a first-timer, don’t worry about how fast or slow to go; just cover the mileage each day and get plenty of rest. If you’re more experienced, focus on hitting the appropriate intensity on each run. You don’t want to go too fast and get injured. You don’t want to go too slow and miss your race goal. There are a few reliable ways to measure your efforts—pace, heart-rate monitor, perceived exertion, or the talk-test all work.

Head over to the Garmin Marathon site to see what else is in store and get registered for this year’s event. Next week, we’ll announce our special guest speaker for the pre-race pasta dinner. Hint: while his/her marathon PR is impressive, 26.2 miles is more like a warm-up for this ultra runner.
