Our Garmin D2 Pilot Watch Goes Hang Gliding
The Garmin D2 Pilot Watch has been a huge hit among the pilot community since it was introduced last October. The WAAS-enabled GPS watch designed specifically for pilots has been put to the test by thousands of aviators over the last several months, but what has been really exciting is hearing about the various ways pilots have put D2 to good use!
A few weeks ago, I received an e-mail from Steven, a hang glider pilot who had tested out D2. In his message, he explained how hang glider pilots use GPS systems to provide position information and record track logs throughout recreational and competition flights. Steven had previously used a different Garmin GPS system in the past but given that he was a helicopter pilot in his professional life, he thought D2 would be an excellent fit.
Steven put D2 to the test during the 2014 Americus Cup hang gliding competition in Georgia a few weeks ago and captured some great photos while in-flight. In his own words, “D2 does everything a hang glider pilot needs.” In addition to being able to upload his GPS track log for the competition, the ability to display altitude, which features an adjustable barometric setting, provides pilots with the most accurate altitude readout. As seen from Steven’s wrist, D2 also features a moving map display that utilizes a worldwide aviation database so pilots can build flight plans and navigate with ease.
