Oshkosh is Coming, Are You and Your Plane Ready?

The Mecca for aircraft owners, pilots and aviation enthusiasts is right around the corner. This year’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh is shaping up to be awesome – highlights include Boeing’s 100th anniversary, Pearl Harbor 75th commemoration, Canadian Snowbirds demonstration team, Desert Storm 25th anniversary, Third Eye Blind concert and much more! In addition to that, we’ll be there with exciting products, educational seminars and training that you won’t want to miss. With that lineup in mind, it would be hard for any airplane driver to resist the annual pilgrimage. But before your departure day arrives, it’s important to make sure not only you the pilot, but your aircraft as well, are ready for the journey.

First thing’s first – every year EAA publishes a NOTAM that outlines all arrival/departure procedures, radio frequencies, Wittman Regional Airport details, and more. It’s never too early to start studying the NOTAM, and always a good idea to keep a copy within reach for the flight.

Once you’ve brushed up on all the information that goes along with the Oshkosh procedures, you’ll want to make sure your aircraft and Garmin equipment is up-to-date and prepared. When was the last time your Garmin avionics databases were updated? It’s important to have the latest information regarding airspace, airports, obstacles and more uploaded into your avionics. The FlyGarmin website makes it simple to purchase and install aviation databases.

Lastly, you’ll want to make sure piloting skills are just as current as an airplane’s equipment. If it’s been a while since you’ve flown, be sure to take a few laps around the patch to make sure your landings are on point, since you’ll be aiming for a dot at Oshkosh. Slow flight is important as well. You never know if you’ll get lined up behind a Piper Cub or Aeronca Champ on the Fisk arrival. You may have to throttle back a bit for them, but keep in mind – they’re going as fast as they can! And remember, aviate-navigate-communicate (and by communicate we mean rock your wings!).
