Blimp Flight Deck

Fixed-wing, rotorcraft, gliders and now…blimps? We have taken our customer portfolio a step further and expanded into the lighter-than-air aircraft category. German blimp manufacturer Zeppelin completed the first Garmin integrated airship for Goodyear North America in 2013, the Zeppelin NT (New Technology) N07-101, with FAA certification received in August 2014.

The relationship between German Garmin dealer Air Plus and Zeppelin began in October 2011 with the collaboration of a newly designed cockpit for their venerable airship. The flight deck for N07-101 includes two G500H flight decks, pairing the GTN 650 and GDU 620 for optimized navigation and weather information. Goodyear’s new blimp, nicknamed “Wingfoot One,” is also the very first ADS-B equipped airship. Two Garmin GDL 88D units give the airship ADS-B In/Out capability exceeding the FAA 2020 ADS-B requirements and providing unprecedented traffic awareness to the pilots.Watch this video for a peak inside the cockpit.

“Wingfoot One” is the first of three new N07-101 Semi Rigid Airships slated to replace Goodyear North America’s three aging GZ-20 blimps by 2017. In addition, three flying Zeppelins in Germany will be modified with our new integrated cockpits by 2018. The skies above sporting events, fairs and concerts will soon be occupied by the most recognizable advertisement in the sky, with the help of Garmin!
