The picture above was taken at Namib Naukluft National Park in Namibia on a recent road trip with the nüvi 3597 LMTHD. Moments like this make road trips so much fun. It's a great way to travel on your own schedule and explore new territories. Thorough preparation is key though, especially when driving in foreign countries where you don't speak the local language or if you plan on traveling in remote areas. Here are a few tips to make sure you won't get lost on your next road trip adventure.

1. Use On-board maps

Using your smartphone for navigation when traveling abroad can easily result in skyrocketing roaming fees for data transfers. Chances also are that when traveling in remote areas, you won't always have cell phone reception. A dedicated navigation device, such as Garmin's nüvi devices, therefore definitely is your best choice as these devices don't rely on cell phone reception to function. You can find a variety of maps for your nüvi for countries all across the globe here. Alternatively, you also might want to consider one of our premium navigation apps with onboard maps. These apps allow you to turn off data roaming on your phone while still being able to navigate. Our NAVIGON and StreetPilot apps are available for many countries around the globe.

2. Plan out your route

There's nothing worse than wasting time on the road trying to find a point of interest or location, so make sure to use the Garmin trip planning feature to plan out your entire route in advance. If you're traveling in remote areas or if you're trying to find locations that aren't saved in the database, our coordinate input feature comes in very handy. Just look up the coordinates for a location and enter them as a destination to add the location to your route.

3. Take an outdoor GPS for hikes

Lastly, if you plan on leaving the car and continuing by foot in remote areas, we recommend packing one of our outdoor handhelds or the Garmin fenix outdoor watch. This will allow you to mark the location of your car and easily find your way back. Garmin fenix has a handy TracBack feature that will provide you directions back to any marked waypoint right on your wrist.
