The MidAmerica Nazarene Pioneers Cross Country team is on their way to the starting line of their upcoming season. The MNU cross country team consists of nine men and nine women who dedicate their time running between 60-70 miles per week in preparation for a meet. As a team, they run about 1,170 miles combined a week, which is the equivalent of 4,680 laps around an average track. All 18 runners are equipped with a Forerunner 220 to guide them every step and every mile.

“I wanted to make sure we included them as part of our team,” said coach Wade Watkins. “The ability for the athletes to download data to their phones and computers help them see what they have achieved immediately following the workout.”

This is Watkins' first season as the MNU cross country coach and a first year program for the school. The team plans on using the Forerunner 220 during their first few meets which will help them with pacing and relaxing. “The details of the Heart Rate, Pace and Mapping among other things help me coach and monitor the whole athlete, and should make a huge difference in a first year program such as ours,” said Watkins.

The Forerunner 220 GPS running watch has a high-resolution screen color display and tracks distance, pace and heart rate. It even has a built-in accelerometer so you know distance and pace data when running on an indoor track or treadmill.

Halley Dean, a freshman from Shawnee, KS said, “I’m impressed by the accuracy of a dozen watches running together”. Another teammate, Clay Cutburth of Fort Worth, TX said, “The watch is user friendly interfaced, and easy to use.”

“As for our goals this year, my expectations are that both teams make the NAIA National Championships on Nov. 21st in Charlotte, NC,” said Watkins. Follow their journey by supporting them at their first meet, September 6th at William Jewell.
