Meet Norman, the Resilient GPSMAP Handheld

A scenic hike in the British Virgin Islands resulted in quite the find for Sabrina N. recently.

Yesterday, we were at The Bight in Norman Island BVIs.  We decided to take a hike up and over to the other side of the island, which would be the south side of Norman Island.  I don't think many people attempt this hike as the path was very overgrown, but it only took us about 30 minutes.  Once we got down to the rocky beach, what we found was a lot of trash, most of it plastic and wood.

While it was sad to see all this trash, it was also interesting to see what it was comprised of.  Tom (my husband) found a roll of tape that looked like police tape but had the name of an Asian fish company on it.  There were lots of fishing floats and nets, along with plastic bottles of every shape and size.  Then he found something very interesting amongst the trash: a handheld Garmin GPSMAP 78.  It didn't have any batteries or data chip, the screen was scuffed and there was sand in the battery compartment. We took it back to the boat, Tom cleaned it up and dried it out and put a couple of batteries in it.  Then came the moment of truth.  He hit the power button and it fired up!

It ran through its start up and found our position.  There is a track that shows St. John and St. Maarten, as well as a trip through Drake Channel in the BVIs.  Pretty amazing!  This is one tough little unit!  We have named him Norman, Norm for short, after where we found him.  He is now spending time happily with the rest of our Garmin family of units on board s/v Honey Ryder.

Thank you for the story, Sabrina.  We certainly hope that you and Norman have a bright future navigating together.
