Lucy’s Logbook: New features available for Garmin aviation portables

Our aviation software engineers at Garmin have been hard at work since Oshkosh and are excited to announce the availability of new software for the aera 500 series, GPSMAP 695/696, and G3X! The most recent updates have added some great features which enhance the capabilities of these systems.

Aera 5XXOne of the noteworthy features available on the aera 500 series with v4.10 is the display of the runway number labels on the extended runway centerlines. This makes anything from planning the approach at your destination airport to anticipating your base-to-final turn a breeze. In addition to the extended runway centerline display, each line is labeled with the corresponding runway number.

Many of you have taken advantage of and utilize ADS-B weather on your Garmin portable via the GDL 39. The most recent software for the aera 500 series and GPS 695/696 allow pilots to take advantage of port forwarding.  This enhancement enables you to receive ADS-B information while maintaining your current interface.  For example, if your aera 500 series is interfaced to a Garmin SL 30 radio, you can receive ADS-B information while also keeping the VHF Out capability.  Furthermore, updating your portable to the latest version of software will automatically update the GDL 39 software to the current version, v2.40.

696If you were lucky enough to brave the heat in Oshkosh last month and hang out with us in the Garmin booth for a bit, you may have noticed our new TargetTrend technology on Garmin Pilot and the GTN series. When used in conjunction with a GDL 39, the aera 500 series, GPSMAP 695/696, and G3X will also now display TargetTrend relative motion technology! This awesome feature is also coming soon to the aera 796/795.

What is TargetTrend? Unlike conventional “absolute motion” displays, TargetTrend Relative Motion technology calculates how the other aircraft is moving in relation to your aircraft. This new feature displays a green “stinger” line that displays the direction of movement of other aircraft. However, in the event you are faster and overtaking a slower airplane ahead, the green stinger will point back toward your aircraft as TargetTrend identifies a potential conflict.

With the latest versions of operating software in your aera 500 series, GPSMAP 695/696, or G3X, we’re certain you’ll love the new TargetTrend feature, along with a few other enhancements that are available with a simple and free software update.
