Lucy’s Logbook: Getting the Most Out of TIS-B

Last
week, we discussed some specifics about Flight Information Service –
Broadcast (FIS-B) weather which is one half of the ADS-B system. This week, we
will cover the other component, Traffic Information Service – Broadcast
(TIS-B).

January 1st, 2020, all aircraft must be ADS-B
‘Out’ compliant. The information provided by participating ‘Out’ aircraft offer
air traffic controllers and other aircraft real-time data such as GPS position,
ground speed, track or heading, altitude, and identifying information such as
squawk code and ICAO number.

TIS-B traffic can be received in your aircraft from one of
two sources, either air-to-air or uplinked through a ground station. The GDL
39
has the ability to pick up aircraft that are broadcasting ADS-B ‘Out’
and will display their location on the connected device, whether that’s a
portable Garmin GPS or tablet utilizing Garmin
Pilot
. Check out all of the traffic we picked up on Garmin Pilot using the
GDL 39 on our flight into Flying Cloud, MN!

Traffic that is uplinked from a ground station requires you
to be near a Ground Based Transmitter (GBT).   TIS-B traffic is only
broadcast from GBTs to aircraft that ‘request’ the traffic, which is
accomplished by being ADS-B ‘Out’ capable.  It’s important to remember
that pilots can only receive TIS-B traffic if their aircraft is equipped to
broadcast ADS-B ‘Out.’ Why? Simply put, it is the FAA’s way of limiting what
traffic pilots see in an effort to encourage them to upgrade their avionics
sooner rather than later.

What if you are near a GBT and have a GDL 39, but are not
‘Out’ capable?  As long as you are within 30NM and +/- 3500’ of a
participating aircraft, the GDL 39 will listen to the GBT and receive the same
traffic picture that the participating aircraft receives.  Essentially,
you become a parasite by taking advantage of the air-to-air capabilities of the
GDL39.  The traffic information that is received can be displayed on most
Garmin portable devices as well as the Garmin Pilot app.

So what if you want to become ‘Out’ compatible AND see a
full traffic picture?  Well, of course Garmin has a solution!

The GDL
88
is a certified, dual link ADS-B receiver which receives from both 978
MHz UAT and 1090 MHz frequencies, painting a more comprehensive traffic
picture.  On a compatible display, the GDL 88 will also overlay
subscription-free FIS-B weather!

It’s important to remember that simply upgrading a GTX 330/33 to “ES” or
Extended Squitter, along with a required GPS position source, will not bring
ADS-B ‘In’ capabilities to any aircraft, but will comply with the January 1st,
2020 ADS-B ‘Out’ mandate. This offers a reasonable solution to pilot’s who are
looking to fulfill the 2020 ‘Out’ requirement.

Just when you think you might know the “In’s” and “Out’s” of
ADS-B (pun intended!), the number of aircraft that need to comply with this
mandate is in the thousands. Even though we have several years before our
aircraft need to be compliant, now is the time to start considering what best
fits your flying needs!
