Lucy’s Logbook: Are you ready for some football…and TFRs?
The hot summers are starting to give way to cool crisp air and that can only mean one thing – football season! My favorite season conjures up weekends full of grilling and tailgating, but it can also bring some not so fun events like sporting event-related TFR’s (Temporary Flight Restrictions). While Garmin can’t supply the chips and baked beans, we do have you covered when it comes to TFR notifications.
The ability to display TFR related information is available on Garmin portables via an XM receiver or a FIS-B datalink from the GDL 39. If you utilize Garmin Pilot on an iOS or Android device, TFR’s are also available if you have access to a wireless network (WiFi or cellular) and will be visible in flight as long as the TFR’s are still valid. To access TFR’s from the ‘Map’ page, touch the Map Overlay menu on the map. Select ‘TFR’ in the menu to overlay any temporary flight restrictions on the VFR sectional chart, IFR Low or High Enroute charts, and Roads and Borders basemap. Garmin Pilot takes it one step further and displays TFR’s in a color-coded format. TFR’s outlined in green represent a restriction specific to forest fires and an area in red symbolizes a TFR due to dignitary visits. An area outlined in dark blue corresponds to special event areas such as air shows and sporting events.
As always, it is imperative to confirm TFR information through official weather briefing sources such as Flight Service or Air Traffic Control. The FAA also has a dedicated website which depicts temporary flight restrictions graphically and lists them by state, type and facility.
