Lucy Flies with Garmin Pilot 5.3 for iOS!

I had the opportunity to take the latest version of Garmin
Pilot
on my iPad, flying this weekend! The latest features and integration
capabilities are exciting and sure to enhance your flying experience!

D2 Integration
D2 Pilot Watch

Before I took off out of my home airport, I wanted to check
out the integration of Garmin Pilot and our D2 Pilot Watch in
action! Announced last month, D2 is a watch designed specifically for pilots
and has the ability to display course information and wirelessly receive flight
plans from Garmin Pilot. To transfer flight plans and waypoints to D2, I put my
watch in sharing mode by pressing the orange key and scrolled to ‘Share Data’
and then selected, ‘Garmin Pilot.’ To transfer my flight plan, I selected
‘Menu’ from the Active FPL on my iPad* and touched ‘Send to D2 Watch’ and in
seconds, my flight plan and course information was in D2!

Audible TAWS/Traffic
Alerts

Back in August, Garmin Pilot added obstacle and
terrain data, offering pilots additional situational awareness capabilities. To
further enhance safety, obstacle and terrain alerts are available in a visual
pop-up format and are audible,
guaranteeing you don’t accidently overlook them in flight. Even further, when
paired with a GDL
39
, Garmin Pilot provides audible traffic alerts! To enable these alerts,
visit the Audio section within General Settings on your iPad or iPhone.

Decoded TAFs

Decoded TAFs (Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts) offer pilots
easy recognition of whether or not their departure or destination airport (or
any airport in between!) is VFR, MVFR, LIFR, or IFR. The TAF is conveniently decoded and color-coded which
makes deciphering the forecast even easier.

Enhanced NOTAM
Support

NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen) are now displayed relative to your
aircraft position and flight plan. NOTAMs may be viewed in split screen mode
as a widget for your home airport. As if this wasn’t already easy enough,
entering in a flight plan allows pilots to gather NOTAM’s pertinent to their
route of flight. Along the bottom of the widget, slide the bar between your departure
and destination airport pair and NOTAM’s automatically populate!

Track Vector

Track vector extends a pilot-configurable line in either a
time or distance format. For example, set up Track Vector Length within the ‘Ownship/Route’
tab to display nautical miles to effortlessly maintain a five nautical mile
distance from a particular ring of controlled airspace.

Lucy had a great time flying with Garmin Pilot 5.3 this past
weekend and have no doubt you will too! Loaded with a lot of innovative and
exciting features specific to traffic and terrain awareness, weather analysis,
and integration with our D2 Pilot Watch, you’ll be excited to see what we have in store in the coming
months with Garmin Pilot!
