Let Helm Help You – Part 1: Inland Fishing

HELM

Have you ever wanted the ability to control and see the screens of your chartplotters from a remote location on your boat without having to purchase another unit? With the free Garmin Helm app and a Helm-compatible device, you now have that opportunity. Read below to find out how Garmin Helm can work for you…

Let’s say you are fishing a team tournament and you are running Panoptix on your unit in the front, but your partner can’t read your graph to see what is going on ahead or to the side of your boat. With the Garmin Helm app, you can simply mount a Helm-compatible mobile device to the console or somewhere on the back deck, and your partner can see a live image of your chartplotter. This is a massive benefit for both anglers, because as a team, you are now able to put more fish in the boat!

Helm is compatible with any Garmin units that have built-in Wi-Fi or the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series when used with a Marine Wi-Fi Adapter.

If your chartplotter has built-in Wi-Fi, follow these steps to set up your unit with Garmin Helm:

  1. Make sure your software is updated
  2. From Home, select Settings
  3. Select Communications
  4. Select Wi-Fi Network
  5. Toggle Wi-Fi to On
  6. Press OK
  7. Enter a network name (SSID)
  8. Select Done
  9. Enter a Network Password
  10. 10. Select Done
  11. 11. Connect to the Wi-Fi network you made on your tablet or phone.

If your chartplotter requires the Marine Wi-Fi Adapter Kit, you must follow the instructions in the Wi-Fi adapter’s manual to establish the wireless connection with your phone or tablet.

Download Garmin Helm now on the App Store, or Google Play
