Kansas City Marathoners: on your mark, get set … go!

Since the 405 is designed as a sport watch that you can wear all day—not just for your runs—it has a power save mode that turns off GPS unless you have started the timer. It helps preserve battery life, but the downside is that your 405 could go into power save right before your race starts. If you’re on the training pages, the timeout period is 5 minutes, which means with no interaction after 5 minutes, the 405 will go into sleep mode, turning off GPS and changing the screen to display the time. Now, you can change your 405 settings to disable the timeout setting. This feature was made available in a recent software update, so make sure you have the latest software for the 405, which you can download in a couple minutes from the "updates and downloads" tab on the 405 web page. To disable the timeout setting: Press and hold menu, then select training > options > timeout. The default setting is “enabled.” Change this to “off.” Now, as long as you’re on any of your training pages or the Virtual Partner screen, the 405 will not go into sleep mode. It will still time out if you are on any page in the GPS or time/date mode.

Here’s another race day tip that Jake and I discussed with the pace team leaders for tomorrow, who will all be sporting Forerunner 405s: set one of your training pages to display average pace vs. current pace. Same goes for runners who have a specific goal time or pace in mind. Average pace is a good indicator of how you’re doing over the long haul. In other words, if you (or your pace group) slows for a bit on a long run or race, average pace is going to reflect how you’re doing overall instead of striking panic when you see your current pace is off.

Good luck to all running tomorrow and stay tuned Monday to hear the outcome of the contest to predict Jake’s pace.
