Jake’s Journal: Getting fit, raising funds with Garmin friends
Peg and I have a pretty good gig. We spend our workweek spreading the word about the world’s best technology in fitness and outdoor recreation, and then we get to go test it all out over lunch, after work and on the weekends. This month, we get to add another element to these amazing experiences – helping others and raising money and awareness for great causes. Tomorrow, she and I will each captain a team in the Patriots’ Run, a 9-hour, 11-minute relay that takes place every Sept. 11 in coordination with a similar event being run by many of our troops in Afghanistan on the same day. Last year’s Patriots’ Run was remarkable as each team passed a Forerunner 310XT as our baton and used it to chronicle the entire race. I’ll be once again doing a three-hour leg and getting in 18 miles of training in preparation for marathons in Kansas City and New York. But as opposed to some other long runs on the weekend, inspiration won’t be hard to find.
Two weeks later, Peg and I will again be captains for a great group of Garmin endurance gurus. Fourteen of us have signed up to ride Kansas City’s Bike MS event, a two-day round trip in which more than 2,000 cyclists cover 160 miles to raise money in the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. Our group – which we named “The Other Team Garmin” so that no one would confuse us with our argyle friends on the pro tour – has already raised more than $3,000 with more money coming in every day. And it’s not just the 14 of us on TOTG who are kicking in. Last week, all of our colleagues at Garmin’s headquarters chipped in and had some fun during our silent auction. Thanks to donations from local businesses, bike shops and our friends in the fitness and outdoor industries, we were able to surpass our fundraising goal with two weeks to spare. If you would like to help The Other Team Garmin raise money to fight Multiple Sclerosis, visit our team page or send us an email and we’ll point you in the right direction.
