How to Shoot a Time-lapse

VIRB XE

A time-lapse is created by taking a series of photos of a scene or object with a slow state-of change. A time-lapse is easy to create on an action camera and can add a cool scene to the video you are creating. Take out your new Garmin VIRB XE with 1080p and 60fpm capabilities and capture a sweet time-lapse. Here are some simple steps to creating a quality time-lapse.

1. Find a subject matter or an element that will change over time. Some interesting elements could include a sunrise or sunset, moving people, cars, clouds, or flowers in bloom.

2. Select a fixed foreground as a point of reference for the moving elements. Plan on where you are going to leave the camera over time and think about using a tripod or a VIRB mount to ensure camera stability.

3. Choose the proper time-lapse interval framework. This depends on what you are taking photos of and how fast the scene is changing. For example, a fast changing scene like moving traffic will require a shorter interval between photos like 1 to 2 seconds. For a slow changing scene like a construction project will require a longer interval of 5-15 seconds to ensure fluid motion during playback.

4. Turn the camera on and go to the menu screen by pressing and holding the menu button on your Garmin VIRB XE. In the menu, go to the “video” setting and change the mode to “time-lapse”. Once you have chosen time-lapse, scroll down the settings to change the “time-lapse interval” to your preference. Also, change your field of view to either “wide”, “zoom” or “ultra-zoom”. This will depend on how close you are to the subject you are recording.  Once you have everything setup, press and hold the “menu” button to return to the original screen and you are ready to record.

By following these simple tips, you will have an awesome time-lapse to show off. Here is an example of what your time-lapse could look like.
