Hood to Coast 2008: Memories made, lessons learned
After spending roughly 3 days in various stages of running and driving through the Pacific Northwest, Jake and Peg made for home yesterday. As we trudged through the Portland airport, fellow Hood to Coast runners were easily identified by their stiff shuffle. And our band of 4 flyers probably weren’t the only ones who lingered at the foot and back massage chair at Brookstone. Despite the lack of sleep and general soreness, we’re all ready to sign up for next year’s adventure. Jake and Amy even started planning out team and runner names on the return flight to Kansas. We’ve also come up with a list of “lessons learned” from Hood to Coast.
1) You can never have too much water or Ibuprofen onboard.
2) If other people’s sweat makes you wince, don’t sit in the upholstered van seat vacated by a runner who just finished his leg.
3) Backpacks don’t make great pillows.
4) Nail clippers double as a multi-tool useful for piercing blisters.
5) Don’t care for porta potties? Get over it.
6) Make sure the porta potty latch is latched—securely.
7) It is possible to bathe, or at least shampoo one’s hair, in a public restroom.
8) Frigid Pacific waters make an excellent ice bath for aching legs
9) Doesn’t matter what the food vendors are selling at the post-race party—you’ll never be so glad to consume calories that don’t come in a foil pouch
10) Never fall asleep on a plane or van when fellow passengers have cameras in hand.
Here’s a closing sentiment to the team from Stan, Garmin’s director of fitness sales and marketing. Stan, a Jersey boy if ever there was, has been running for 38 years, and has enough street cred in both the sport and the business side of running to justify his ringtone—Springsteen’s “Born to Run”. From Stan: Thanks to everyone involved. In all my years of running, I will look back on this event as one of the highlights! I am ‘jogging’ this week and look forward to hooking up with you dudes and dudettes down the road for more runs. Rock ‘n’ Roll.
