Heli-Expo Day 2: Satisfy New FAA Helicopter Safety Rules With Garmin!

Greetings from sunny California and the 2014 Heli-Expo! With the second day in full swing at the largest helicopter trade show in the world, we’re staying quite busy showcasing all the latest avionics solutions Garmin has to offer the helicopter market.

Last week, the FAA issued a final rule that places stricter flight rules and procedures on certain helicopter operators, including all Part 135 and air ambulance operators in the United States. These stricter rules include improved communications, training, and on-board safety equipment. The good news? Garmin is here to help!

Under the new rule, Part 135 helicopter operators are required to equip their helicopters with radio/radar altimeters. Garmin offers the GRA 5500, which offers the latest and most accurate technology for tracking current altitude above terrain. The GRA 5500 incorporates built-in self-test monitors that continuously cross check the data and system integrity to ensure an accurate measurement of above-ground level (AGL) altitude. The GRA 5500 can integrate with existing systems to enhance night vision goggle (NVG) operations and fulfill the radar altimeter requirements for advanced applications such as HTAWS, CAT II ILS operations and TCAS II/ACAS II.

Further adding to the latest set of stricter flight rules, air ambulance operators in the U.S. will be required to equip their helicopters with Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning Systems (HTAWS). Garmin offers a variety of solutions which features HTAWS capability, including our GNS 430W/530W navigators, GTN series, or G500H PFD. The option to integrate HTAWS on a remote annunciator is also available.
