GTN Tricks, Tips and Shortcuts Series: Part 1
This past weekend, I climbed into a Grumman Cheetah to do an Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC) for a gentleman that flies at a nearby airport. As I stepped in, buckled up and looked at the instrument panel, I was not surprised to see an Apollo GX 50 and GX 55 staring back at me – it was a simple, straightforward panel and the best part? They were going to get (and got) the job done perfectly well.
Later in the flight, while he was flying outbound on approach #4, my curiosity got the best of me and I asked, “Do you think you’ll upgrade these at some point?” He chuckled and said, “I was actually just playing with a GTN 650 the other day. It was pretty impressive, it seems so much faster and easier to get to the information you need, but I’d probably need a few pointers along the way."
While we continued onto approach #5, I told him about all of the features and shortcuts that he probably didn’t have time to dive into. I realized there are a lot and promised I’d put them down on paper for him (and everyone else, for that matter) because after all, he was in the middle of an IPC!
GTN Shortcut #1 – Flight Plan Page shortcut
On the GTN 750, navigate between the moving map page and the flight plan page with ease. From the moving map page, simply touch the CDI/Flight Plan Bar at the bottom of the screen to access the flight plan page; to go back to the map, simply touch the ‘Back’ button.
To do the same on the GTN 650, touch the CDI/Flight Plan Bar at the bottom of the default navigation page for quick access to the flight plan page.
GTN Shortcut #2 – Access the map… anywhere, anytime!
I am willing to bet most of you spend 80% of your time in flight, on the moving map page. From any page within the GTN 750, you can easily get to the moving map from anywhere! On the GTN 750, quickly access the map by simply pressing and holding the ‘Home’ soft key.
The Apollo GX 50 and GX 55 certainly got us through the IPC last weekend but there’s no telling how much easier it would have been with a GTN on board! Stay tuned in the coming weeks for additional tips and tricks, including some brand new shortcuts that will leave you wondering why you didn’t replace that GX 55 even sooner!
