Giving Back Through Running – KC Trolley Run
Giving back is not a new concept to Jason King. His family gave up almost everything in order to adopt their daughter Jetta from an orphanage in Uganda. Adopting Jetta wasn’t easy – she had severe eye impairments. Through understanding Jetta’s struggle, King and his family have seen how much impact races that raise money can have on those who need it. He now urges others to participate in the Trolley Run which raises funds and awareness for the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired, which helped Jetta immensely when arriving in Kansas City.
Garmin associate Jason King adopted his daughter Jetta in December 2009. When Jetta came to the United States from Uganda, she was lacking in motor, social and verbal skills. It was all due to her limited eyesight, which she immediately got checked during an extensive eye exam as well as a surgery to help correct her right eye. A friend of the King’s was on the board of Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired and got them connected with the center and they immediately set a plan for Jetta.
During the 3 years Jetta attended CCVI, the barely walking and speaking 2-year-old became so joyful and social. “They brought it all out of her,” said King. “She just talks and talks and talks.” They gave her Orientation and Mobility therapy to strengthen her body and help with overall movement. She learned to use her hands to help her eyes and she started learning Braille. CCVI taught her to take advantage of the eyesight that she has and use tools they provide to help her with her daily life. They also took her outside to learn how to navigate the world safely and understand how to use all of her senses to compensate for the low vision. “They spend more than $20,000 per year per child to do what they do and we paid less than 10% of that,” said King. “Scholarships, donors and the Trolley Run paid for the rest.”
The Trolley Run is the largest annual fundraiser for CCVI and all funds raised from the race go towards critical programming at the center. Located in Kansas City, the Trolley Run is one of the largest timed four-mile road races in the country. It is a fast and flat downhill course throughout the heart of Kansas City. Now in its 27th year, it is the 6th year the King family has participated. This year the event will take place on April 24th. Register here! The Kings continually support and attend CCVI events. If you’d like to volunteer, donate or participate in the race, visit the Trolley Run homepage for more information.
