#GarminMarine Spotlight: Meet Team Tuppens

Team Tuppens Boat

We sat down with Captain Steve Sprague of Team Tuppens to see how their team began and how their season is going. Team Tuppens consists of Captain Steve Sprague, his 10 year-old son Christopher, James Gilchrist, Jason Phillips, and Billy Brodbeck. Let’s see what they have going on!

Garmin: How did Team Tuppens get started?

Steve Sprague: I own a marine and tackle shop, Tuppen’s Marine and Tackle, down in Lake Worth, Florida. I got into the boat business because of my passion for the industry and all of a sudden I found myself working all the time and not boating and fishing anymore. When my son Christopher came around, I started boating a little bit again and I saw how much he enjoyed it. I began fishing some small local tournaments and found myself fishing more and more.  From there I started moving up to fishing larger tournaments. Most of them were for charity and of course we were always trying to catch the biggest fish. The types of fish I was trying to catch were kingfish, dolphin, and wahoo.

Now Christopher can run the boat and knows the drills when we get a fish. He turns on the Garmin GC 10 cameras that are pointed downward and switches the display over so we can see the sharks below the boat.

Garmin: What has Team Tuppens been up to this season?

Steve Sprague: We kicked off our season in January in Key West with an SKA Pro Series event. It was a two-day tournament and on day one we lost a great fish at the boat. On day two, we caught a lot of fish, including one large fish. We ended up finishing in the middle of the pack at that event.

After Key West, we had some time off from tournaments and started attending the boat shows with my 38 Jupiter sporting a Garmin wrap. It was displayed at both the Miami and Palm Beach boat shows. Every year, I build a new boat and Garmin decks it with the latest electronics. This year, I’m running dual GPSMAP 8215 chartplotters, xHD2 radar, and GHP Reactor autopilot with SmartPump.

Our tournaments started again at the beginning of April and will keep going almost each weekend until the end of August. We go to South Florida, North Carolina, and Biloxi to compete. We’re currently sitting in 8th place in SKA Division 10 heading into the Big Dog Fat Cat in July. Hopefully we can catch a big one to put us near the top and send us to the SKA National Championship in October.
