Garmin with 2nd Place Finish in Race 7 of Clipper Race
After 27 days of racing from the Whitsunday Islands, Australia, to this first-time port in Da Nang, Vietnam, Garmin captured another podium finish, its fourth so far, by finishing in second place.
The winning team was Derry~Londonderry~Doire and third place was claimed by GREAT Britain.
A fantastic reception in Da Nang anxiously awaited the Clipper fleet to arrive in Da Nang with thousands of spectators, media, family and friends. Garmin Skipper Ash Skett commented on the race and the welcoming in Da Nang:
"Wow, what a welcome here in Da Nang! So many people here – it looks very impressive! This was an unexpectedly long race and was tough in terms of endurance, but we usually do quite well when it gets rough. We endured and managed to get our greatest result yet, which we're all really happy about."
Garmin and GREAT Britain have been in a constant battle for position since the race began. "Yet again we were battling with GREAT Britain, for quite a number of days and it was always visible on our tracker,” said Skett. “It did have the edge on us to begin with, and north of the Equator we had quite a few miles to make up, but we pushed the boat hard and made up the ground. It still took us right up to the end of the race to squeeze out the extra miles but I think we had a slightly more favorable wind as we were coming back north. We played the tacking angles quite spot on and overtook GREAT Britain on the second-to-last day, so we were absolutely thrilled with all the effort we put in. We just refused to give up and I'm proud of the entire team for that.”
Ash added: "Podium positions are beginning to become a bit of a habit, but until now they have always been third places. It feels great to finally break that curse. It is a big result for us today and we now just need to concentrate on our first win. It's coming!”
Through seven races in the Clipper Round the World Yacht race, Garmin is sitting in fourth place overall in the standings. While the Garmin boat has stayed consistent in its finishes up to the midway point in the race, it has struggled gaining valuable “gate” and “ocean sprint” points. That seems to be what separates Garmin from its competitors up to this point. As long as Garmin stays consistent and is able to gain those bonus points throughout the second half of the Clipper Race, look for a strong finish from the Garmin boat.
Garmin and the rest of the Clipper teams will now rest and enjoy Vietnam for the next 10 days before the start of Race 8 to Qingdao, China.
