Garmin Marathon: memorable and meaningful with each step
The tragic events at this
week’s Boston Marathon may have left scars on our nation, but it can’t taint
the resolve of the running community. With our hometown marathon, the Garmin
Marathon In the Land of Oz, just three days away, there’s been an outpouring of
support and stories. Some local runners, robbed of their chance to head down
Boyleston Street to the chants and cheers of spectators from around the world,
will be here, running the final mile of our course. A crowd of spectators and
supporters will be in place at Garmin headquarters around noon to cheer them
down the homestretch. Other runners will wear commemorative bibs in a show of
support. Carly Baltes, communications director for the Olathe Chamber of
Commerce, the organizers of the race, said the support for the marathon is
greater than ever. “People have a stronger will to run and show everyone that
they are not going to let these tragic events affect what they have been

We envision there will be
fewer dry eyes when the national anthem is sung at Saturday’s start line. Emotions will be high and we’ll keep the
runners going with the best aid station support around from Garmin associates who
volunteer, complete with Oz-themed costumes and props. Then Jake, our official marathon
emcee, will bring them across the finish line, where there will be much
celebration. For all those running and volunteering, we’re looking forward to
celebrating every mile and minute with you. For those who want to be a part of this memorable and
moving show of support, join us as a spectator, or there’s still time to register
for the full marathon, half marathon or 5k races. We’ll have a full slate of Garmin pros here for
a speaker series during the expo, including ultramarathon champ Josh Cox, elite marathoner Desi Davila, plus
famed ultrarunner Scott Jurek, the keynote speaker for the pasta dinner.
