If there’s one thing we love, it’s hearing about customers who use our products for unique journeys or daring adventures. When those Garmin-guided journeys intersect with a tale of true love, it’s a match made in the heavens.

On December 24, 2013, Steven and Caroline headed out for a training ride with their cycling friends in Cary, North Carolina. Riding is a big part of their lives since they both race competitively. In fact, this compatible couple met in a cycling club during their undergrad days at UNC-Chapel Hill.

“At the end of our ride that morning, Steven hurried off and said he had to do some stuff that afternoon,” Caroline said. That’s when Steven struck out on a purposeful path — using his Edge 500 on a single-speed mountain bike to record a track that spelled out this: “Will you marry me?” On Christmas Day, after exchanging gifts with family, he took Caroline aside to show her the map of his route from the previous day. In a perfectly orchestrated proposal, Steven got down on one knee and let his laptop with the mapped route relay the proposal. Caroline, a high school English teacher, said the “penmanship” was a little hard to read, but she knew immediately what it meant. Her “yes” came in the way of a comment on his ride post.

If you look closely at the path, you’ll see that Steven actually biked on streets, not simply an open field. That took a bit of planning, but for this grad student in GIS (geographic information systems), it was the perfect challenge that allowed him to leverage his understanding of maps and grid systems. “He even found a road with a curve in it for the question mark,” Caroline said.

To help the happy couple get their marriage off to the right start, we’re sending them a gift package that includes a pair of Edge 510 bike computers, Team Garmin-Sharp jerseys and other accessories. Now Steven and Caroline can share their racing adventures with fans and friends thanks to the 510’s social sharing features through the Garmin Connect Mobile app. And when Caroline is racing with her Pain Pathways elite team, Steven can live track her from his phone to find her on the course or even follow her stats from back home. And she can do the same when it’s Steven’s turn to race.

We hope these UNC Tar Heels will enjoy sporting the argyle as they ride happily ever after.
