This past weekend, Garmin athlete, Jenny Kalmbach, finished
in second place in the 32-mile Molokai to Oahu paddleboarding race. This race, which has been called the “toughest
race on water,” crosses the infamous Kaiwi channel. It tests an athlete’s
skill, endurance, mental strength and determination. This race has made and
broken countless athletes over its 15-year history. Distance isn’t the only
hurdle as the wind, waves and currents can be equally as difficult.

Before the race, Jenny shared some of her pre-race thoughts
heading into the event:

As the hours pass and
Molokai gets smaller behind you and Oahu gets a little bit closer, you have to
fight the mental demons that are telling you that you’re getting tired. You
have to stop worrying about who you’re beating and who is beating you and you
just have to keep paddling. The best advice I ever got was from someone before
my very first crossing; he said to me “don’t expect to win, don’t even expect
to finish, just focus on enjoying the experience and don’t take yourself too
seriously. If you fall, laugh it off, because once you stop laughing or
smiling, it’s all over.” I smiled a lot that year, I loved every minute of that
first crossing, and all I can do this year is to hope to feel the same way.

While the conditions were very tough this year, we saw Jenny
smile and focus on finishing the race. Congratulations Jenny on your second
place win and we can’t wait to see you compete next year!
