Drive Nacho Drive: Using a nüvi to Navigate Asia Part 2

Drive Nacho Drive 2
This is the second part of our Drive Nacho Drive story from last week, providing some more details on how they used a nüvi 3597 LMTHD to navigate around Asia in their 1984 Volkswagen bus.

Another time we decided to get off of the highway for a while, and saw a mess of tiny roads squirming along the base of a ridge. We made our way out to the ridge and turned onto the little roads, denoted on our nüvi as thin white lines. We were surprised and delighted to find that the roads were not only tiny, but nothing more than double track dirt paths between rice paddies! We drove them for a couple of hours, enjoying the scenery and the calmness of Thailand's backroads. When evening fell we curved close to the ridge to find a camp spot when we came across a large family of monkeys in the road. We stopped while they climbed around inspecting us, and then left quickly when a family elder started flashing his teeth! We stopped near a pond around the bend, made some tea, and watched the sun sink into the ridge.

Sometimes people ask us why we don't just use a smartphone for navigation. I try to explain that the places we strive to find, the unexplored, the faraway and hidden nooks and crannies, are almost always out of cell phone range. This was true all throughout Central and South America, and holds true for Asia as well. It may be possible to download maps beforehand and load them, but data plans can get convoluted and costly, and it would require us to go through the phone plan setup every time we cross a border. We're more than happy just to drop our nüvi onto its mount, turn the key, and head off into the wild.
