Drive Nacho Drive: Using a nüvi to Navigate Asia Part 1
We've been following Drive Nacho Drive and their road adventures in a 1984 Volkswagen bus for quite some time here on the Garmin blog. After crossing South America, they just finished their Southeast Asia route and are headed to India. We thought this would be a good time to check in with Brad to see how helpful the nüvi 3597 LMTHD has been that we sent him back in May. Here's the first part of what Brad had to say about using the nüvi in Asia:
A few months ago we got our hands on a Garmin nüvi 3597, and just in time to set out across Thailand in pursuit of a little adventure. Finding camping spots in Asia has been a challenge for us, owing largely to the fact that most of the land is covered by jungle, or else used for crop production. We've found that the best way to find a solid camp site is to look for the most remote place in the area and go there. The nüvi has been indispensable for this; it came loaded with not only street maps for all of Asia (Garmin: we loaded these maps onto the nüvi and they are available on our website for most models), but also 3-D topographical maps. This means that we can easily use the touch screen to zoom and pan around the countryside until we find tiny rural roads that lead into mountains or around ridges, and then go scout them out for possible camping spots. This has led to some wildly successful nights of sleep.
In one instance along the Burmese border in Western Thailand, we used the nüvi to find a tiny road that led over a ridge and into a sunken valley. When we got to the end of the road we found an enormous cave with a stream coming out of it surrounded by drooping mossy trees. We explored the cave and slept surrounded by jungle ridges to the sound of rain on our roof.
…to be continued next week with part 2.
