Davide Formolo, one of the up-and-coming riders for the Cannondale-Garmin Pro Cycling Team captured his first career stage win in the fourth stage of the Giro d’Italia.

A native of Italy, Formolo, held off overall leader Simon Clarke near the last sprint and won with a 22 second cushion. He finished the 150km stage ride from Chiavari to La Spezia in 3:59:47.

“It was a really hard day because it always up and down and never flat,” said Formolo. “We always had two riders in front until Tommy Danielson had a mechanical. The break always rode very hard except on the descents. It was a very difficult day, but I am so happy with the results for myself and the team.”

Formolo, 22, stayed with the lead pack for most of the day and attacked the final climb with 13 kilometers remaining to push ahead.

“He rode with a lot of class,” said Cannondale-Garmin Sport Director Charly Wegelius. “It’s a great result from a rider that we know has a lot of promise. He showed that promise to the world today. We are very proud.”

Earlier in the year, Formolo was voted Best Young Rider at Volta ao Algarve in Portugal in February, which showed some potential for future wins.

The race also moved Formolo up in the overall classification for the Giro d’Italia (Tour of Italy) to ninth place. The Tour continues until May 31 where it ends in Milan, Italy.
