Crappie Fishing at Pymatuning: Day 2
Day 2: After a good night’s rest, everyone was ready
to head out for what would hopefully be a better day of fishing. Day two started out on Pymatuning again but
in a different area than where we had been the day before.
I set out with Dan
Dannenmueller, professional angler and proponent of spider
rigging. The
weather seemed to be cooperating at first and, according to local news sources,
we were in for a nice, sunny day in the mid-to-upper 70’s. Great.
This would be much better than the day before. Once we arrived at the launch point, we had
noticed some clouds rolling through and within 15 minutes of being on the
water, our rain gear was on because it was coming down hard. At the first sight of lightning, we got off
the water and decided to wait it out.
After about 20 minutes of steady rain, the storm passed and out came the
sun. Although a bit muggy, we were able
to resume our fishing.
We trolled through some nearby embankments
with a good amount of settled brush and made our way over to a nice area full
of lily pads. Some of the group had
already been fishing this area and had some success so we figured we’d try our
luck here as well. For the remainder of
the morning, we circled this medium-sized clearing of pads and had a few bites
from bluegill and a few crappie. More
importantly, the weather was cooperating and we knew we were in the clear.
For the afternoon, we took to moving to Conneaut,
a beautiful 925-acre lake about 30 minutes east of Pymatuning. Although we were still fishing primarily for
crappie, we knew we’d probably see smallmouth, largemouth and white bass,
northern pike, and bluegill. The sun was
still shining and the 77-degree forecast had come to fruition. It was still a bit windy which made it hard
to stay in one spot without getting blown around but we could deal.
I launched with Dale Black of
Gamma fishing lines and ended up having a great time. Conneaut is a small lake with beautiful homes
lining the edges and a lot of nice coves and spots for crappie to hang
out. The only thing we knew was at our
disadvantage was, again, this drastic changing of wind and weather. After about 4 hours of great conversation on
Conneaut and trying every spot, from docks to cove and back again, we decided
to head in.
We met up with some more
anglers from our group and made our way back to the launch point. Although the first two days were filled with
a lot of great information and new fishing techniques, we still weren’t
catching a whole lot of fish. The third
and final day had to be better, right?
