Christian_vdv Watson_00001770033 Watson_00001770063 In a race where merely crossing the finish line was an unattainable feat for some, Christian Vande Velde pulled off a 17th place finish at the road race in Beijing. Christian was the second American across the line behind Levi Leipheimer, who finished 11th. Conditions were extremely hot and humid for the 245.5 km race. Of the 143 cyclists who stared the race at Yongdingmen Gate, 90 finished. Team Garmin’s Julian Dean finished 54th, with Ryder Hesjedal on his wheel in 56th place. David Zabriskie dropped out of the race halfway in order to save his legs for the individual time trial event on Wednesday. Read Christian’s account of the race, including a description of the expressionless guards keeping fans off the course in Beijing. Stayed tuned for more Team Garmin racing updates following the time trial with Zabriskie and Hesjedal, followed by Taylor Phinney tearing up the 4000 meter short track.
